UPDATE: We were wrong when we said this is the first year that a black girl crowned another black girl. We totally forgot that Rachel Smith crowned Crystle Stewart in 2008! (how could we?!!!)
It's back-to-back wins for Miss DC USA!!!
This year's Miss USA pageant created some great discussion around the internet on feminism, universal healthcare, and whether or not beauty pageants can be modernized. Even Refinery 29 got in on the conversation! This is a quote from MUO president, Paula Shugart:
Only time will tell if pageants can truly become modernized, but either way, Shugart's sure she's already seen the worst of it. "The reason we succeed is because we change with the times," she says with a smile. "It's only natural."
Do you think beauty pageants are a thing of the past? What do you guys think the Miss Universe Organization/IMG can do to modernize their pageants (Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA)? This question is the reason Pageantology's slogan is "...defining the modern beauty queen." We like the idea of a modern day beauty queen and we think our new Miss USA, Kára McCullough exemplifies what it means to be a modern beauty queen!
